Intrinsic Instability of Coronal Streamers

Plasma blobs are observed to be weak density enhancements as radially-stretched structures emerging from the cusps of quiescent coronal streamers. In this paper, it is suggested that the formation of blobs is a consequence of an intrinsic instability of coronal streamers occurring at a very localized region around the cusp. The evolutionary process of the instability, as revealed in our calcula...

Coronal streamers revealed during solar eclipses: Seeing is not believing, and pictures can lie

For those fortunate enough to have personally witnessed and photographed the visible corona surrounding the Sun during a solar eclipse, pictures are usually a let down for not living up to the visual view. After 150 years of investigating the corona, we understand it more fully and now know this difference to be real. The difference stems from our inability to either see or image the true distr...

Large-scale Globally Propagating Coronal Waves

Large-scale, globally propagating wave-like disturbances have been observed in the solar chromosphere and by inference in the corona since the 1960s. However, detailed analysis of these phenomena has only been conducted since the late 1990s. This was prompted by the availability of high-cadence coronal imaging data from numerous spaced-based instruments, which routinely show spectacular globall...

Persistent Coronal Streamers and the Identification of Sunspot Clusters

We use limb synoptic plots to study long-lived features of the lower solar corona. The most persistent features are the polar sinusoids, which are generated by streamers associated with active regions. We Ðnd that the lifetimes of these structures (up to about 10 solar rotations) are much longer than the lifetimes of individual sunspots (typically less than one solar rotation). The long lifetim...

Connection between Active Longitudes and Magnetic Helicity

A two-dimensional mean field dynamo model is solved where magnetic helicity conservation is fully included. The model has a negative radial velocity gradient giving rise to equatorward migration of magnetic activity patterns. In addition the model develops longitudinal variability with activity patches travelling in longitude. These patches may be associated with active longitudes.
